Let’s go Scandi

The Scandi look – It’s fresh, it’s got appeal, it’s trendy, but yet it won’t break the bank.. These days, virtually anyone can achieve the Scandinavian look on a budget. It is no secret that I love Scandinavian design. It is simple, clean, pared right back but yet so warm, cosy and incredibly stylish.

In Australia, Scandinavian design has emerged as a dominant style more recently, and can be credited in part to the growing presence of IKEA since 1975. Scandinavian countries and all they encompass are trendy at the moment. From their royalty to “hygge” [the Danish practice of snuggling up and appreciate life’s little luxuries], Australians seem to have embraced that way of life.

The Scandinavian style is light fresh and neutral, so it will naturally appeal to a broad market. This palette works well with the Australian environment because it’s not dissimilar to a coastal style. Scandinavian-inspired homewares currently saturate the mainstream design market, but the longevity of this style divides experts. In terms of style, Scandinavian design is definitely a trend at the moment, but some of the basic elements of the style, like light walls, blonde floors and timbers is certain to have substantial longetivity in Australia.

As a minimalist, I tend to think that “less is always more” naturally.

Dining room
Here the dresser was used as a sideboard in the dining room. The Danish Wishbone dining chairs were a splurge, but well compensated for the spend by updating other inexpensive pieces with a coat of paint. The candlestick was an ugly acid green before being painted it a soothing grey, and the oak pedestal table also got a brand new white coat of paint.

Kitchen area
Basically, keep it uncluttered, with a splash of colour here and there, to flow seamlessly with the rest of the home. You can choose IKEA’s most basic line of kitchen cabinets.

Throughout the house, stick to natural wood elements, such as these cutting boards which lend warmth but are light enough to keep rooms feeling bright.

A white and bright décor theme always allows you to group together objects of every type to create instant vignettes.
